The town hall of Bilzen dates from the period 1686-1689 and is one of the oldest in Limburg in terms of architecture.
Why does Bilzen town hall have a double staircase?
Bilzen belonged to the prince-bishopric of Liège. In the 'Ancien Régime' there were two mayors: one elected by the city and one appointed by the prince-bishop of Liège. In order not to jeopardize their equality during ceremonies, each mayor had his own staircase to enter the city hall.
A gate under the facade gives access to the basement, where there used to be a prison.
The town hall today.
The town hall houses one of Bilzen's two tourist information offices. You can go here for tourist information, cycling and walking maps, regional products and gift cards. You will also find the Meeting point of Jazz Bilzen there.
The platform: what is that crazy column on the market?
In front of the town hall is the platform, popularly known as 'het piegelke'. A symbol that the Prince-Bishopric of Liège gave to all 'good cities'.
