Vineyard de Ranker

Their growing passion for winemaking convinced Anna and Kurt to plant some vines in 2016, primarily to make wine for themselves. The Haspengouw region proved ideal for growing and producing high-quality wine. So they decided to expand their passion to Wijngaard de Ranker.

The story

Kurt trained in agriculture and showed an interest in fruit growing from an early age.
Anna broadened her knowledge in this field and took a course in agriculture and viticulture in 2019. She officially became a vineyard manager in 2021.

Together, they continue to educate themselves to stay up to date with new developments and to gain new ideas.
For them, it is very important that viticulture is done with passion, vision and craftsmanship, with respect for people and nature.

Their son Xander has also caught the bug. He is studying at agricultural college and enjoys helping with harvesting and processing the fruit. In the spring of 2021, the vineyard was completely expanded and another 1,600 vines were planted.

The wines

They cultivate five different grape varieties for wine production. They have chosen to plant newer varieties that are less susceptible to fungal diseases. Souvignier Gris, Johanniter, Solaris, Cabernet Cantor and Cabernet Cortis probably don't sound very familiar to you. By choosing these varieties, they need to use fewer pesticides and can produce a more environmentally friendly wine.

In the winery, the wine is given the time it needs. Slow fermentation and the natural clarification process give the wine every opportunity to develop its aromas and full flavour. This also ensures that the acids are nicely balanced.

The ciders

Cider is made from a blend of different apple varieties grown in Haspengouw. De Ranker uses apples from standard orchards. An apple from a standard tree has more aroma and the diversity of varieties is greater.
Standard trees also increase biodiversity in our landscape, which benefits nature.

They currently produce two different ciders, which we present in a festive 75cl bottle. All our ciders undergo a second fermentation in the bottle.
